Friday #MentalHealth #MythBuster: Our Parents Didn't Have Mental Illness

#It's a myth that earlier generations didn't suffer from mental illness

#Earlier in mental health's history, people didn't see mental health professionals in outpatient settings to treat mental illness

#Many mental health diagnoses are biologically based

#Mental illness does run in families but there are instances where people don't know their family's mental health history

#In earlier times, mental health treatment was provided in extreme ways to treat the mentally insane and criminals

#Institutionalization and shock treatment were often the methods used in the early part of the century to treat people with mental illness

#Seniors can have their mental health treatment customized to fit their multiple medical needs and age

#Although not always discussed, older people can develop mental illness in later life

#At times, and in all age groups, short-term psychosis can manifest due to a co-occuring medical condition or chemical influence

Feel free to share these hastags on Twitter and Facebook. This list is not exhaustive of mental illness
